A Pond Spitter Makes a Charming Focal Point for any Water Garden

See more in Gardening Methods

Even though the term sounds somewhat gross, a pond spitter is really a lovely bit of statuary you can place in or near your backyard pond which will “spit” water continually into your pool providing a lovely sprinkling sound, recirculating water, and aerating the pond to make an optimum environment for fish. It is possible to buy many varieties of pond spitters, in shapes large and small, and they make a unique and charming focal point for your water garden. However, they can be expensive. It’s easy, however, to create a pond spitter yourself and save a lot of the cost. In addition, you’ll end up with a pond spitter that’s different from all others.

The first step in building your own pond spitter is to select a piece of statuary that you would like to showcase in your water garden. You need something which is heavy enough to be able to stand firmly in the pond and that’ll also be durable enough to weather the elements. A great choice of less costly pond spitter statuary could be made from aluminum, plastic, cast stone concrete, or resin.

Of course heavier metal statues made from brass or bronze would also generate a lovely garden centerpiece, however they will also cost a great deal more. Choose a statue that will fit in well in your pond environment. Fish and birds are always popular as are frogs and other water creatures, including mermaids. When selecting a statue, you’ll want to stop and visualize what it might look like if converted into a spitter and sitting in your water garden.

Once you’ve purchased a statue, drill a 1/4” hole inside the mouth or other suitable place in your statue in order to run plastic tubing through it. Once the tubing is connected to an inexpensive solar pump, your pond spitter will be good to go. Based upon what you pay for your statue, you could wind up aquiring a great spitter for as little as $20, and it will create all of the ambiance that expensive, commercial models do. Find a nice place in your rocks where you can nestle your new water feature, so it becomes a natural part of the landscape.
