A Simple Way To Make A Bamboo Fountain

See more in Garden Design

Having a bamboo fountain can add a certain magical ambiance to your home garden. This unique fountain hails from Japan where it was created by rice farmers as a way to scare deer away from the rice paddies. Therefore, it isn’t strange to learn that they have been called “deer chasers”.

The bamboo fountain found a new use with the monks who used them to measure their meditation times. With more people conscious of the environment, the bamboo fountain is garnering more notice since it is made of environmentally friendly material. Still, the bamboo fountain possesses a simple design and charm that attracts people. Another perk is that the bamboo fountain is flexible enough to use indoors as well as outside.

Constructing a bamboo fountain is easy and takes just a smaller number of parts to build. You will need bamboo, tubing, a pump, a base, rod, screws, and container. If you are constructing an outdoor bamboo fountain, it is wise to use a quality bamboo that will not crack under variable weather conditions. Apart from practical considerations, if you mean the bamboo fountain for inside use, you might consider polishing the material to make it more appealing and longer lasting. Other tools needed to build your own bamboo fountain include a screwdriver, wood saw, and a drill machine.

Once you’re ready to build, you should start by cutting the bamboo sticks to the preferred length. There will be three bamboo sticks in the construction. A stick will hold the nozzle while two other will hold the moving piece on the bamboo fountain. The moving part of the fountain is the essential element in your bamboo fountain because it is responsible for collecting the water and emptying it as the weight of the collected water increases. Moving on, you will have to drill a hole through the center of the two other bamboo sticks as well as the moving part. These holes will accommodate the rod that allows the fountain to pivot.

For the second [phase] of construction, you will take a pipe and connect it from the pump up through the bamboo. The pipe will be capped by a nozzle made of bamboo. Now that this is all done, you can mount the pieces to a base. Your bamboo fountain is properly constructed when water coming out of the nozzle falls inside the part of the fountain in motion.

If you’ve read this and realize you don’t want to build a bamboo fountain from the ground up, you can always buy an easy-to-install kit at a home and garden center.

If you do get a bamboo fountain, you might like to know how to maintain one. Any maintenance will concentrate in two places. The first area is water pump care. You need to have the water pump below the surface of your retaining pool when running. Don’t forget to clean the pump regularly. The second aspect of bamboo fountain care is scheduled water replacement. While you won’t have to change the water on a bamboo fountain that constantly operates, you still need to schedule a time so you’re not dealing with stinky water.
