Regular wooden shutters were the standard for as long as we’ve had shutters. Today, though, vinyl and other types of shutters have taken the place of traditional wood house shutters. What is causing wooden shutters to quickly becoming obsolete is that they cannot simply be installed and then forgotten. Many of us today are interested in a way to cut down on chores around the house. Wooden shutters call for repainting or re-staining about every other year, even if they are mounted inside. There are other ways.
Exterior house shutters are usually only used for decorative purposes and are never closed, unlike in days gone by when shutters were first invented. Shutters used to keep out the elements years ago, before double paned glass. Nowadays, shutters are always open, but do add a finished look to any home.
As we slowly replace our wooden shutters, we can explore the advantages of the following types of shutters:
Vinyl Shutters
Just as tough as vinly exterior siding, vinyl house shutters need no upkeep and will not rot or fall apart. The only problem with vinyl shutters as opposed to wood is that they are easily dented if anything is tossed at the windows. To put it another way, they are less durable than wood when it comes to rocks, hail or other debris. Many homeowners are willing to live with this because vinyl shutters look good, are relatively inexpensive and maintenance free.
Composite Shutters
These are cheaper shutters crafted from composite woods instead of solid woods. The advantage of composite shutters is that they are resistant to termites and rot and will last a lifetime. They usually come pre-stained and do not need maintenance, yet appear the same as real wood. Composite Shutters are a happy alternative for anyone considering maintenance free shutters.
Fiberglass shutters
Fiberglass is tough and durable. Fiberglass is well suited to exterior house shutters and is sometimes used in places where the shutters need to be closed, such as parts of the world that are routinely hit by hurricanes. Fiberglass shutters are slightly more expensive, but they are solid, maintenance free and able to take a hit. They are an excellent choice for anyone who lives in an area affected by hurricanes as they can put up with some abuse.
Aluminum shutters
Similar to vinyl shutters, aluminum shutters are a complement to aluminum siding and are a popular choice for homeowners. While vinyl was very popular a generation ago, knocking aluminum out of the spotlight, aluminum shutters showed up again and are currently very popular among people who want stylish and maintenance free shutters that will last a lifetime.
Whether you are looking at shutters for the exterior or interior of your house, you will find a wide variety of maintenance free shutters available. The style of house shutters that are best for you will depend upon how much you want to spend as well as the eventual purpose of the shutters. Wood House Shutters can be useful for everything from staving off damage from a hurricane to improving your curb appeal. Find the ones that are right for needs.
