Advice On Choosing A Lawn Mower
See more in Garden Design
It’s time to buy a new lawn mower so you head to the shop and quickly grow overwhelmed by all the choices available. However if you know what you are looking for before you get there, the selection process gets a good deal easier.
There are three factors you should consider first. Know the slope and size of your yard. Work out what features you will require. And determine the power and quality of the motor.
Now let’s decide if you require a walk behind lawn mower or a riding lawn mower. If your lawn is under three-quarters of an acre, the better selling walk behind mower would be a wise choice. A little and flat lawn will not require a lot of additional features. A self propelled walking mower is a better choice if your yard is larger than a half an acre or has a lot of mounds and tough terrain. These mowers move without any pressing on your part. Your job is merely to walk behind it and steer it around any turns.
Whatever kind of mower you get, the mower deck and engine strength should match your yard. The amount of grass cut by one pass is set by the mower deck. If the deck is bigger, you will have to make fewer passes over the grounds. Mowing will be simpler if you combine a large deck with a powerful engine. However too big or too much power is simply tossing money away. Matching the lawn mower with the grounds will give you the best results at the best price.
You also have to determine the size of the back wheels. You will be able to mow easier on difficult lawns with many hills if the rear wheels are bigger. Otherwise, standard wheels will be OK.
Lawns over three-quarters of an acre are better suited for riding lawn mowers. There are a lot of alternatives for mower deck and engine sizes here as well. The principles stay the same. A bigger engine and broader deck only make sense if you have a few acres. You will be wasting money if you purchase extra size and have less than an acre to mow.
There are different ways to operate and direct your riding lawn mower. Go with the one that is most comfortable for you, whether it is steering sticks or a steering wheel. A zero turn lawn mower will enable you to turn easily around landscape features like trees and shrubs. If your yard does not have several of these, then this is an extra feature that you in all probability don’t need.
Lastly, decide whether or not you want a mulching lawn mower. The grass blades will be shredded into fine shards by specially designed lawn mower blades. The fragments act as a natural fertilizer after they return to the ground and break down. If you do not mulch, you will likely need to bag, and that means catching the clippings and disposing of them.
Of course there are many additional selections. You can get electric mowers that are cordless or corded. You can purchase a solar powered lawn mower. You can even buy a robotic mower that you don’t even need to be around while it does the job. But understanding what you need before looking for lawn mowers for sale will make the search a much simpler undertaking.
