Benefits of Different House Shutters
See more in Garden Design
Basswood is the ideal material for most wood house shutters. Not only is it hard-wearing and able to withstand most temperature extremes, but it is also cost effective and attractive both inside and outside the house. Although there are other hardwoods used to make shutters, basswood is the number one choice when purchasing wooden shutters. Another alternative is vinyl house shutters.
Interior shutters are usually very straight and have a smooth finish. Unlike many species of wood that have heavy graining, basswood has a finer grain, making it a perfect kind for outside and inside shutters, specifically for people who are not fond of grainy wood but like to see the wood itself instead of paint.
Basswood is lightweight enough to handle and install easily, yet strong enough to stand up to the extreme heat or cold. When you buy interior window shutters, they will probably be made of basswood. There are several different woods used to make shutters, and you can read more about them here:
Oak
Oak is a most elegant wood and is very heavy. Oak also has a coarse grain. Since oak is so solid, it is not the ideal material for interior wooden shutters because it can put a strain on the window jambs. Many people also do not like the grainy appearance of oak, yet oak is difficult to paint. Oak remains a very common choice of wood for shutters, although not necessarily the best choice.
Maple
Maple is also a golden colored, heavy wood that makes great furnishings but can be very labor intensive when it is used for shutters. Because maple is so tough to drill through, the jambs must be drilled before you can install the shutters, a task which can be difficult. Maple interior shutters are heavy, like oak, and can wear down the window jambs. Another good choice is vinyl house shutters.
Cedar
Cedar is a very strong hardwood that stains very well. Cedar wood is not very heavy which results in it being an agreeable material when it comes to interior wooden shutters. Because it is lighter than oak or maple, cedar shutters will not damage the window jamb. However, cedar is more easily dented than other woods and can have need of replacement.
Poplar
Because poplar contains so many minerals and has an olive undertone, it looks more attractive when painted than it does when stained. For a lot of people, the benefit of wooden shutters is the look of real wood. Most people reject poplar because they would rather not have to paint the wood. Painting usually requires touching up much more routinely than staining. Because of this, poplar, while less expensive than the other woods, is not very popular when it comes to vinyl house shutters.
