Don’t Forget Your Garden When You Need More Space – Think Beyond The Loft!
See more in Gardening Methods
The roof is the usual means to increase the size of your house, but the garden may offer a better, cheaper alternative. The conventional image that springs to mind with the phrase ‘wooden garden building‘ is a bogstandard shed, or maybe a leaky summerhouse with peeling paint. The latterday version is a more salubrious affair, an all-weather answer to the need for more space: properly lined, insulated and double-glazed, with utilities and frequently plumbing too.
The wooden garden room offers a number of key advantages over a classic loft conversion. The first is that your ideas are not compromised by the size and shape of your roof. A loft conversion will always feel like a stopgap unless you decide to go for a hugely costly ‘building-up’, with all the chaos that ensues.
A newly-built garden room however, can be designed and built exactly to suit, with the whole build and installation a far simpler and less messy affair.
After the building, either off-the-peg or bespoke design, goes up, the specialist installer will be able if necessary to landscape the garden to ensure an appropriate setting. Another advantage becomes apparent once the building is complete. If you’re used to working through distractions, the peace and quiet will seem like heaven. The effect is no less pleasant whether the room becomes a gym, home-cinema, games-room or kids’ play room.
The purpose-built consulting room of psychotherapist Clare Mason has become a retreat for both herself and her patients. ‘It’s incredible what a difference having this beautiful room has made to my work.’
The idea of a haven away from the noise and motion of the house appeals to most of us. In addition, if ever there comes a time to sell, it’s likely a
buyer will immediately see it too, and begin to mentally move in their desk or multi-gym. Such a building, in short, is probably going to pay for itself many times over, whatever its ultimate use.
It’s the new word in home improvement: leave the packing crates in the roof where they are – I’m building my world in the garden!
