When making good compost, it is essential that you have worms on hand. The sight of worms may make us squeamish at some points but what we do not know is that these repulsive-looking organisms has to be given a lot of credits to. Vermicomposting can not be done without worms.
Worms are in a constant search for suitable food, penetrating all parts of the matter, excreting end products that are readily available for breaking down by microbes. The use of worms to break down organic wastes into composts reduces the bulk of your kitchen waste and other eco wastes such as eco nappies and so on.
Worm composting is a high quality organic fertilizer. It is a huge help in the endless problem of waste disposal. Vermicomposting can cut down on the size of land fills as well as the amount of fuel needed to collect this waste to bring it to the landfill.
Although the process of vermicomposting can be very complex, it is very easy to do. With a steady supply of “good micro-organisms” a worm will quickly generate great fertilizer. Worms will quickly reduce the amount of waste that you send to the landfill and will reproduce so that you can do this indefinitely.
Wastes such as vegetable scraps or animal manure are packed with primary nutrients namely proteins and minerals plus energy. Should they be artificially produced may cost huge expenditures. Worm composting on the other hand is the natural and effective means of converting wastes into valuable end products. These nutrients are returned to the soil for good use.
The worm castings produced through breaking down of organic material are good for soil drainage and aeration. The tunneling of these worms create a good avenue for aeration of the compost thus allowing water, nutrients, water and oxygen to filter down.
There are many advantages to worm composting systems. They are great for growing ornamentals as well as fruits and vegetables. It aids in aeration and drainage thus improving soil condition.
Some studies have found that households can cut down on 60% of their wastes just by using a healthy vermicomposting setup.
The ability of these micro biologically active worm composting to regenerate nutrients allows for replacement of the lost nutrients from chemical fertilizers. It yields adequate moisture holding capacity of the soil, improves the structure as opposed to the chemical fertilizers’ negligible effect. This method of acquiring organic fertilizers from wastes is highly adapted and valued by farmers all over the world.
