Getting rid of disgusting rats
See more in Pests and Disease
Rats are absolute pests which make their way easily into our homes. Rats in the home can bring disease and even bugs. They chew wires which can be very risky.
Rats are an absolute nuisance and no sane person would like them to stay in their homes. You have to identify how they get in and stop them.
Having rats in the house is not a symbol of cleanliness and hence it is necessary to wipe them out as quickly as possible.
Rats are visible in all open spaces, cupboards, beneath the bed, in kitchen cabinets. They like food of any kind, including pet food. Rats are fascinated and gorge on leftover food which also means they eat leftover pet food as well.
Outside the home, they secretly bury themselves in waste paper baskets, inside stones and rubble, beneath wooden and timber piles etc. Rats found outside the home for e.g. in your courtyard would make clean entry into your home, even without your knowledge.
First and foremost, you need to clear your courtyard so as to prevent rats from entering your home.
Firewood should ideally be placed above the ground and not at ground level. Keep the outer areas of your home clean from debris and trash.
The garbage bins need to be firmly closed, so that the rats do not find their way into the garbage bin. Rats find it difficult to climb very high containers and hence make sure to place even your pet foods tightly closed.
Once you have cleaned up outside you need to clean up inside.
Check out for any open food grain containers and do not forget to close them. Use a sealing material to close all the holes of the walls, so as to prevent rats from entering. Independent houses with tall trees in the backyard usually have big branches, so it is important to cut them, otherwise you would be welcoming rats into your house. Rats love the moist atmosphere, especially the kitchen sink and the bathroom drainage and would stay in places which are dirty.
Once you have identified that there are rats in your home, either hire the services of a professional or try out laying rat traps.
Rats can prove fatal to life if they bite you and they also transmit many diseases.
