Not making the best use of your backyard? Is it uninviting – not an attractive spot to spend time in? A backyard makeover with a pergola as the focal point could be the solution.
Basically a pergola is a structure, usually made of wood, on which plants can be grown. Generally there are four columns supporting a lattice framework. Yes, building a pergola is a place to grow jasmine, climbing roses, wisteria, clematis, even vines if conditions are right. But it offers so much more. It is time to go into the yard and observe. Light and warmth are important factors. When does the backyard get the sun? When the wind blows what is the direction? Is the yard level or are there some uneven areas? Where are the utilities (pipes and cables). And, naturally you’ll need to know the plot size.
Decided that a revamp of the backyard would be a good idea? Starting point is to grap a pencil and some paper. There are many computer based landscape design site, some of them free, but I prefer to start with pen and paper. It can take time for your thoughts and ideas to really come through. This is not a process to be rushed. Never go beyond the planning stage until you have totally worked through all the possibilities and you are happy with the decision. You get pergolas in various sizes. Make sure you pick a size that’s large enough for how you’ll use your pergola but one that’s not too big for the space available in the backyard.
Pergola kits can be purchased in a various materials such as wood and vinyl. Or you could purchase a set of plans. Pergola plans come in various sizes and you get a list of materials and instructions on how to build. Cedarwood is an excellent choice for a pergola as it not only looks good but is very long lasting. If you want the classic pergola look opt for cedarwood.
Think a diy pergola is beyond your skill level? Hire a local handyman to build the pergola – you supply the plan,materials and instructions. Far cheaper than purchasing a pergola kit.
