Here’s How to Install House Shutters
See more in Garden Design
If you have some carpentry experience and know how to use a level you could install your own house shutters. If you feel uncomfortable about doing the job, you can pay a handyman to install some shutters on your home. However, installing house shutters is relatively easy and can be performed by anyone with basic knowledge.
Do not be intimidated at the thought of installing your exterior house shutters. If your neighbors can accomplish this simple job, so can you. You simply need to learn some basic concepts. There are two recommended ways to install your shutters. You can choose between an inside mount or an outside mount. It is recommended to use an inside mount that can be completed right from your open window.
Inside mount installation
For an inside mount installation, the shutter is connected flush with the inside of the window casing on the window jamb. This is normally a easier process of installation and is used primarily by professionals because it is less complicated and requires no framing strips.
Begin by checking to see that the window jamb is in good shape. Next, you should attach the shutter hardware with screws. You will have to drill a hole into the jamb at the correct spots so that the shutter can be mounted into the window jamb. The jamb should be solid so that the shutter will be secure.
When you have screwed on the hardware, you should check to see if the shutters are straight with the window. You might use a level to be sure that they are straight. Refer to the instructions of the supplier as each brand of inside mounted shutter requires different mounting procedures. If you understand how to use a drill motor, you will be able to effortlessly accomplish an inside mount for your shutters.
Outside mount installation
Obviously, an outside mount is connected to the outside of the window, most often into the trim, and sometimes the wall. If you intend to install an outside mount when using inside shutters, make sure that you do not screw the unit into drywall unless it is anchored as the unit will likely rip itself out of the wall. Some people would rather use an outside mount because you can be not quite exact as regards the measurements, which an inside mount will not allow. Of course this means that the outside mount does not look as neat as the inside mount.
Always use a plumb bob and level when installing house shutters in order to ensure that your shutters are straight. Your eyes may give you bad information, but a level will not. You will also require an electric drill, a set of apexes, and perhaps some molly bolts if you are installing the shutters on sheetrock without a stud.
Do not think you can’t install your house shutters yourself. This is not a difficult job and after you have installed one unit, the rest will go quickly. You only need a free afternoon, the correct tools, which are a screwdriver, drill, toggle mounts (if installing into drywall) and a level, you are capable of doing this job easily and quiclky.
