Have you ever considered a potager design for your garden?
A potager can give you the best of both worlds – you can have your garden and eat it too!
Potagers can be the perfect solution for people with a smaller garden or yard. They are also great for those living on a larger lot who only have time to take care of a small area of land but want to have some color in their garden and fresh home grown vegetables too.
What Is A Potager?
A potager or kitchen garden can be defined in different ways but it usually combines edible plants with an attractive garden display. In some cases only food plants are grown. These can be vegetables, herbs, and also perhaps some fruit and edible flowers such as nasturtiums.
Other people include a few non-edible flowers for display only. However, this is not strictly necessary when you consider how many flowers can find their way into salads.
The potager is an attractive type of vegetable garden which allows the vegetables to be sited close to the house without sacrificing esthetics. This is very good for the vegetables of course, because they get a lot more attention from you that way.
Your Own Potager Design
The design of a potager garden is crucial. It is often considered the ultimate garden, being pleasing to the eye and the stomach. It follows a structured plan combining many different, attractive plants in contrasting groups in close proximity. This creates a display that will rival any flower garden.
The design has to be something that you do for your individual garden. You will not get the best results by copying anybody else’s design, unless they have the same climate, soil type and tastes as you.
You need to consider what vegetables can be grown in your area, how they look and how much of them you can use, keeping in mind that they will all be ready around the same time. Most people designing a potager go for small quantities of many different types of food plant.
Many people use raised beds to allow better drainage. This reduces the chance of plants becoming waterlogged and rotting. It can also make pest control easier.
If you have more space you can add fruit trees or bushes, sculpture, large pots etc.
Potager design can be a very exciting challenge. Try it and you will probably become hooked on planning the perfect vegetable garden for your yard.
