Some Things To Think About When Buying a Solar Fountain
See more in Garden Design
Should you purchase a solar garden fountain or a wired fountain? They each have their advantages and disadvantages but we find that solar garden fountains are safer with easier maintenance than mains powered fountains even though they have the shortcoming of not working well during the winter. The power panels on solar fountains use photovoltaic cells to collect solar energy during the day which is used to operate the pump. Since they need sunshine the pump will reduce speed and the water will stop through the hours of darkness or if the sky is overcast.
Installing a Solar Fountain
Solar fountains are uncomplicated to set up and nearly all will necessitate no difficult installation. Solar fountains either have solar panels built into the main body or remote panels that may be positioned some distance away. This enables it to be positioned in a sheltered position while the panels are positioned where they can gather the sunlight. The remote solar panels can be located on a firm surface, attached to a fence or tree or on a wooden stake planted securely in the ground.
Storing Energy
The majority solar panels aren’t able to store energy so they can’t be used by night. They will work most efficiently on sunlit days and during gloomy days they may only pump water very slowly or stop altogether. During the winter it is best to detach the solar panels as during frosty or freezing weather the pump may work when the sun is out and some damage could occur. A few solar fountains have backup batteries to compensate for short cloudy periods but most are actually only designed to be used on sunny days.
Convenience
Solar garden fountains are convenient as they require no wires from a power source and can be located a long way from the home. With separate panels they can even be positioned in under the trees or in summerhouses.
Solar Pond Fountains
Additionally some solar fountains are specifically made for fish ponds and are also suitable as they don’t necessitate cords from the house. You could set them to float on the surface of the water or fix them in position with rocks or attached to secure them.
Solar Garden Fountain Safety
Solar fountains are environmentally friendly with no poisonous fuel emissions, hardly any noise and no substances that could leak and be a hazard. Since there aren’t any cords they are safe for pets and children.
Conclusion
Fountains driven by sunlight are cheap to run, easy to take care of and safer than wired fountains. Even though they have the shortcoming of working disappointingly during the winter months they will be, nonetheless, an excellent addition to your garden.
