Choosing outdoor furniture requires us to add in a few extra criteria, due to environmental considerations. What can work outdoors for one area, may not be suited to another area that experiences much different, or harsher weather conditions. So we not only have a design choice, but we also have to make sure that the furniture is going to be able to stand up to the rigors of outdoor life. Outdoor rattan furniture is a good choice for a backyard for a variety of reasons.
The stunning designs of garden rattan furniture come from the intricately woven patterns created during its manufacture. Rattan furniture is traditionally created from the rattan vine, which becomes pliable with heat, allowing it to be woven into some interesting and unique patterns. After rattan dries and cools down, it becomes tough and resistant to weather, making it the perfect choice for garden, or outdoor furniture. Modern days have seen the introduction of rattan cane artificially manufactured from PVC; traditionalists can still find furniture made from the original material, which is also a renewable resource.
Tables and chairs, side tables, coffee tables, lounge chairs; you name it, it is all available in rattan cane, be it artificial or traditional. As cane furniture is often associated with the tropics, the right choices will allow you to create a tropical paradise right in your own backyard. Using outdoor cushions will give you the ability to add an interesting splash of color.
Traditional rattan outdoor furniture is most times cane woven over a teak frame. Teak and rattan both have excellent outdoor properties, but eventually the furniture would suffer from mold and mildew buildup due to moisture. Modern versions of rattan furniture are created by weaving the PVC strands around a stainless steel frame. As a result, a quick spray of the hose while you are cleaning the patio, or watering the garden, is all the looking after it needs. For the traditional rattan furniture, a coating of some type of water repellant material is periodically needed to keep it looking good for longer.
Winter months can be especially hard on furniture in some areas, so covering your valuable furniture with some form of vinyl covering is recommended. Going over all the screws and brackets occasionally can help keep your furniture in good condition. Not doing this may eventually lead to a collapsing table or chair, which can be detrimental to your health, or that of your guests. It can also be somewhat embarrassing if it occurs at a party.
